Biological terror is a real threat that the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense are grappling with.  Accurate and quick detection of biological terror agents will be first and forefront for the detection and resulting cleanup of a terrorism event.  Guild Associates, through the BioSciences division, has pioneered biosensor research to improve the speed and accuracy of bio-terror bacterial pathogen detection. Guild BioSciences has successfully introduced bioluminescent genes into reporter bacteriophages. When the bacteriophage infect the target organism, light is emitted by the infected organism, which gives positive indication that the target organism is both present and viable. This light can be detected by standard light measurement equipment and, in some instances, the human eye.

Guild BioScienes has successfully demonstrated this technology on two bioterrorism agents, Bacillus anthracis (anthrax) and Yersinia pestis (plague).  The technology affords fast and accurate detection, and is proven to operate in environmental samples, food samples, and clinical samples (human blood, tissue, or other sample).  Although this technology is still at the development stage, prototype systems have been evaluated by the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN). The application of this technology to bacterial pathogen detection has significant potential to detect biowarfare bacteria.
