BSR-050 Hydrogen Sulfide Removal Media

A new solution for H2S removal

Operators of landfills, waste water treatment plants, and digesters now have a new choice for solving their H2S removal problems.  Guild Associates, Inc. is proud to introduce BSR-050 – a high capacity, fast-acting mixed metal oxide, engineered to remove hydrogen sulfide from waste gas.

Like Iron Sponge media, BSR-050 media has integral catalytic sites to enable a sequence of reactions to convert the H2S to elemental sulfur.  In Iron Sponge media, these reactions only occur on the surface of the pellet; BSR-050 media, however, has a pore structure that enables this reaction to occur not only on the external surface, but thoughout the internal volume of the pellet. Utilizing the entire volume instead of only the pellet surface enables the BSR-050 media to achieve industry-leading H2S removal on a pound-per-pound basis.  As a consequence, BSR-50 offers unprecedented benefits to the operator:

BSR-050 Removal Capacity Far Exceeds Iron Sponge and Activated Carbon Technologies

BSR-050 is compatible with most existing process vessels, so the media can likely be utilized with existing equipment.  For new installations, the high capacity and long life characteristics of the media can  enable smaller vessels, thus reducing initial capital expenditure.  Operational costs are lowered by the less-frequent media changes and less electrical load resulting from varying pressure drop in the bed.  

A useful feature of BSR-050 is the color change of spent media, as illustrated in the picture to the right.  

Pilot-scale tests at a landfill site have proved the media's performance under real-world conditions.  BSR-050 media was subjected to landfill gas containing 600-900 PPM H2S over a 43-day period.  The vessel was sized for treatment using 3.8 lbs of BSR-050 per SCFM of feed gas, compared with the landfill's existing system which utilized 20 lbs of carbon media per each SCFM.  The effluent flow was measured at undetectable levels of H2S until day 40, and the test was stopped at day 43 when effluent flow reached 90 PPM. 


Sharp Color Change Indicative of Fast Acting Media

Analysis of spent media verified that the H2S removal capacity exceeded 1.0 lb/lb.  Further, the spent media was analyzed by an independent laboratory for hazardous material using “Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, USEPA Document SW 846 (February, 2007)" and found to be classified as non-hazardous waste.

Standard pricing for BSR-050 exclusive of taxes and transportation are listed below.  Please note that BSR-050 has roughly one-third the density of typical Iron Sponge media.  Consequently, when replacing Iron Sponge in an existing vessel, assume that the amount needed is roughly 1/3 the weight of Iron Sponge:

SWANApalooza 2020 To Be Rescheduled

In the wake of the Corona Virus, SWANA has announced cancellation of the 2020 SWANApalooza, with the intent to reschedule for later in 2020.  When it is re-schduled, Dr. Joseph A. Rossin, VP of Materials Development at Guild Associates, will be a panelist for the "Hydrogen Sulfide Removal: Exploring New, More Efficient Technologies and Methods" session.  Dr. Rossin's presentation will focus on understanding hydrogen sulfide removal as a complete process to reduce the total cost of operation for disposable media applications.

EUEC2020 Cancelled, Presentations Available Here!

Dr. Joseph A. Rossin, VP of Materials Development, and Dan Moeller, Process Engineering Manager were scheduled to will speak on separate topics at EUEC 2020, the 23rd annual Energy, Utility & Environmental Conference in San Diego, California.  However, the conference cancelled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Case Study:

A customer in Houston, Texas employed a box style lead-lag system to remove H2S from landfill gas. The customer utilized 110,000 lbs of iron sponge to treat 5,600 scfm of landfill gas containing 800 ppm of H2S and 0.1% O2. Due to the low H2S removal capacity of iron sponge, the customer was unable to process stranded gas from additional landfill cells. The customer was flaring the stranded gas, watching revenue go up the flare stack. Further, the customer was performing media change-outs every 3 to 4 weeks.

The customer replaced 110,000 lbs of iron sponge with 33,000 lbs of BSR-050. Due to the inherent benefits of BSR-050, the customer was able to introduce the stranded gas from additional landfill cells into the treatment plant, increasing the gas flow rate from 5,600 to 6,500 scfm. As can be surmised, the previously un- realized revenue was no longer going up the flare stack, thereby increasing the overall productivity of the plant. 33,000 lbs of BSR-050, as compared to 110,000 lbs of iron sponge, increased the change-out interval from 3-4 weeks to nearly 4 months while operating at a higher flow rate. A mass balance demonstrated that BSR-050 achieved an H2S removal capacity of greater than 1.1 lbs H2S removed per lb media. The customer reported no change in the pressure drop across the beds throughout the period of operation.

Unlike spent iron sponge, the vast majority of the spent BSR-050 was free-flowing, as illustrated in the video at the top of the page showing the operator moving the spent media around with his hand.

In summary, the switch to BSR-050 resulted in:
• Less frequent media change-out
• Less cost incurred with each change-out
• Significant increase in H2S removal performance
• Significant reduction in H2S removal cost
• Significant increase in overall revenue
